Thanks everybody for your input. The outcome is that the Barrel, crank, Head and small end bearing were taken to AF. Ben gave a 2 page document on Abrasive damage to Kits, yes blaming the Stainless tank (even though this was washed out before being fitted to the bike) as the possible cause of the failure. He then offered a replacement new Barrel or a re-plate of the old one. My mate took the new Barrel at a cost of £100 and also took some petseal. I personally am still not convinced, and agree with the previous post that said the Barrel would be worn every where, wouldn't it? and yes until convinced I too think it's as good an excuse as any.
Look into my eyes, look into my eyes, buy another barrel

I'll get some pics of the piston tomorrow, but I can't get the hang of uploading them onto here.

would the crank, bigend and small end not be totally trashed being made of a softer material than the bore ,also would the seals be kaput as well :?:
and all that grit would embed itself in the very soft piston and cause massive damage

Have a look in the fuel pipe and filter in carb. Look in bowl too. See if any debris in there.

Cam Lam do a nice rear facing fast flow tap that might not leave a kink in the fuel pipe.
