^... something must have changed then because I've washed mine out with hot soapy water plenty of times, often leaving them to soak, and they've not suffered in the slightest.
As I've a white utility sink it is reassuring to see how much crap comes out of them and makes me thankful that the debris hasn't gone through my motor!

Theoretically would it alter performance to put a flexi pipe on your carb mouth and away from the engine bay entirely like a snorkel, How much air do they need? I see pictures of much bigger bikes breathing through small filters down snorkels into similar sized carbs. I ask because I'm thinking of letting my Avanti breath through the frame on my S1 with a gauze filter or something at the intake end.

If it's foam some luke warm water and detergent should be fine, I think Timbo just got lucky...

clean fresh petrol removes most of the crap in seconds
