Dont think there will be a method that everyone will agree on that is "the way". There's bound to be someone who's read a book on it.
If its a band new motor,its good to take it easy for the 1st couple of miles anyway,just listen to the motor.Just in case you didn't tighten up something that should of been tightened up quite tight.

If Nicasil is so good and doesn't need much running in, can someone explain why the recomended period for the avanti kit is so long?

From the instructions:

"Always use good quality synthetic oil, whilst running in use at 4% for the first 500 miles,
thereafter this may be dropped to 3%. Use an NGK B8ES spark plug or equivalent whilst running
in then maybe changed if necessary to a B9ES
Running in
First 200 miles stay below 45 mph and vary the speed (RPM)
Next 200 miles stay below 55 mph and vary the speed (RPM)
Next 100 miles stay below 65 mph and vary the speed (RPM)
For the next 250 miles keep varying the speed whilst gradually increasing the speed, do not hold at
maximum speed for any length of time. Do not hold at maximum speed until you have done at
least 750 miles.
Extra care must be taken whilst running in if you are running into a head wind or going up hill, slow down
and use a lower gear if necessary, the engine must not labour in any conditions."

Isnt it to do with the exhaust port being bridged?

Is the Avanti nicasil lined? THought it was cast iron only...

Anyway, am curious of the same. There is no question that Ron who is making the kit is very knowledgeable (to say the least) and that the kit performs very well indeed, so why the rigorous running in process...?

I thought it was more to do with the piston than the barrel

As Jordan said its in because the exhaust port is a bridged one.

The reason why you bridge an exhaust port is to avoid the piston rings from popping out as you maximise the port's width, and to minimize piston ring wear.

Shouldn't really affect running in from my point of view...
