pipes play a big part and "getting onto"
avantones new gearbox visualiser explains it much better especially with the new features, whats important is getting the gears to utilise the engines available power getting it onto pipe(when the motor starts pulling) ,most pipes start to pull between 4500 >5500 range so 4 speed on 4.8 gearing regularly drops below leaving no option to change down, the 5 speed keeps it on pipe, quite often going another tooth or 2 on front it wont even get onto pipe in 4th to pull 4th at all barring a downhill or tailwind but a 5 speed will manage to keep a motor on pipe making that tooth or 2 a possibillity

It's a rapido 225 reed motor. It's not 'that' peaky but certainly it's not a long-stroke tractor like Adam's.

obviously not a std kit then, does it perform like the ts with the reed fitted?

eden wrote:thats another point, peaky motors need more gears to , as Darrel says, get on to pipe, or more importantly stay on pipe, my view is that if your motor has a wide enough spread of power and your using a final drive that your motor will pull and your motor will pull a long enough final drive to achieve a high enough top speed for cruising there is little point in spending £600 on a gear box.
it seems to me that many people use the wrong final drive for their motor, and many tuned motors dont have a wide spread of power, the cyclone is a good solution for these scenarios, my only question then is whether £600 would be better spent on the top end rather than the gear box.
In a perfect money is no obstacle world you could just spend on both ends of the motor but then who wants to ride on an old lambretta at anything over 90mph on the road, I know I dont!

i'll stop playing devils advocate now, just bringing some balance to the discussion.
tbh if I had a spare £600 i would buy one just for the "ive got the latest thing", but i dont so I haven't ;)
^... exactly why I like to think of a motor as a whole, rather than a kit, carb, gearing, pipe etc. This bit by bit consideration is what leads some people to end up with great bits but horrible motors, where components simply do not work well with each other.

I'm well impressed with my 5 speed set up!!! money well spent

previously I was running a 5.2 4 speed gearbox set up ts1 ,Revtour mb pipe
my cruising speed was only 60mph

I have currently fitted the mk1 5 speed gearbox. Also upgraded to a 35 tooth 5th
my current ratio is now a 4.8 my cruising speed has moved up too 75mph massive increase there's no lagging between gears super smooth no strain on the engine at all! feel as if I can sit at that comfortably all day also you dont need to drop down at all every two minutes brilliant for mile crunching on motorways :D

I have checked this by gps and also with my sip speedo.
Also I have been on a ride of over a 150 mile round trip on my cyclone no problems at all!
would recommended anybody thinking of buying one!

cheers lloydiee

Just ordered gearkit today, has anyone bothered with the gearshift? There are none in stock just now and wondering if it is gonna be worth the £75 later.

I bought one, as my 4-speed is seriously worn on the bigger MB pivot bolt, but have not gotten around to fitting it yet. For now the 4-speed is still working fine and, let's face it, when does anyone look at the bars when changing gear?!

Fitted the cyclone 100 km ago, and today had a 75km ride thanks to the warm weather (still 13° here in south Italy).
Adam was right is really a pleasure to ride on a climb with the 4th gear in without bother about changing in 3rd. At the top of the hill you select the 5th and there you go, a really peaceful ride with higher speeds than the previous 4 speed box
