the volume of charge held in the transfer duct is less important than the duct shape,
the combined volumes of the duct and case could have positive or negative effects if the volume calculated is too big for your engine design or too small

if you have a 58 stroke 107 rod then bigger transfer ducts would create larger overall crankcase volume and prove useful
but on a 62 stroke 116 rod /large packer the volume may already have been achieved so may not prove useful

muppet,
heres your question mark back

i go for a rough textured finish as many university and yamaha white papers ive read on the subject prove its worth on inlet systems

no is correct

one of the most basic principles of 2 stroke design often overlooked
designed by adolf schnurle approx 1928

i dont reckon that mahoosive transfers at the bottom of the barrel will make too much difference, say you had a ts1 barrel and dynod it as is and then made the barrel transfers as big as the barrel/cases will allow without weld you will gain very little if anything and the time doing so would be better spent on getting the exhaust port a good shape
does the angle of taper in the transfer duct have an optimum angle ? as if you speed the gasses to much or little will it effect how much charge goes where at a given rpm
