2% Castrol TTS (or 2RS) with 98 octane fuel. Works well for the last 15 years (TS1 200/225 and 172 Malossi). Never had problems with the big end bearing.
Edit: 2 instead of 4%

Well, if you're going to do a long motorway ride then adding extra oil is a good idea but around town 4% is too much for a good, fully synthetic 2T like Motul 710, 800, Castrol TTS or Rock fully synth (at least for these oils in my experience).

I often read/hear this but I'm pretty sure it's not true, by adding extra oil you are leaning your fuel/air mixture and therefore are more likely to have problems.GP Kevo wrote:Well, if you're going to do a long motorway ride then adding extra oil is a good idea

Yes possibly but your carb would already be set up to counter this? I think it's more to do about the big end getting enough lubrication at sustained reasonably high rpm ( for a scooter)Skar wrote:I often read/hear this but I'm pretty sure it's not true, by adding extra oil you are leaning your fuel/air mixture and therefore are more likely to have problems.GP Kevo wrote:Well, if you're going to do a long motorway ride then adding extra oil is a good idea

Certainly wouldn't add any more than 4% though

I usually run mine at 4%, having in the past tried 3% and for a short period 2% but the big end let go at 2% taking out the barrel head and piston. At 3% the small end eye was worn and so was the big end. But the engine had done a couple of years running on 3%.
The extra cost of a bottle of two stroke oil every thousand miles gives me a little piece of mind, but I will still run mine at 3%, but not all the time, more when doing short trips or local ride outs.
