The 2 marks are cracks! confirmed by dye penetrant.

At the moment I'm having huge difficulty removing the lower steering bearing race. I might have to cut a slot in it :(

Gearbox stripped , good too as all nuts were very loose.. imagine the absolute slightest pinch up with a 1/4 ratchet.

I noticed something today on the forks... the weld on cable loop, I have 2 welded loops ut have only seen them with 1 welded loop and 1 bolt on loop... any ideas?

Sorry.. due to the edit time out I couldn't add the last bit.

Any ideas when they changed from 2 weld on loops to a single weld on and bolt on? I have found quite a few photos of the 2 welded loop forks.

if your gearbox endplate nuts were loose, check to see if the locating dowels have worn the case, they often do, mine had done so i fitted the endplate without the dowels then drilled trough the endplate and into the case with an 8mm drill then made 2 new dowels in that size, its a tight fit now.

Not sure when they changed from weld on to 1 weld + bolt on but it is not uncommon for early SIII to have both weld on.

I believe it was around December 1963. Same time as the panels changed.

Not a good day I am afraid... couldn't get the flywheel off the crank regardless of which puller was used inc a rather large 3 legged version in addition to the "proper" one and rediculous amounts of heat etc.

I had to sacrifice the crank... this is what's left of the flywheel taper.
