You have to admit, getting a several thousand volt spark out of a small engine is a miracle of determination over logic. Never mind several thousand per minute.

Repaired my flywheel and boss and on measuring found the LT coil to be well outside of limits so fitted a spare that I had previously repaired with new coil and pick up. Revved faultlessly in my workshop to 8000+ rpm. First time every time starter. Went to join our rideout last night and it started misfiring as I tried to rev above 4500 rpm under load. Limped home feeling sorry for myself.
So how do you measure pick up height ? Any advice with regard to measurement would be greatly appreciated.

No, you need to assess whether the alignment is high or low. If the stator is low then you can lift the pickup by fitting plates (as supplied now with BGM stators) under the pickup or by placing 3 equal thickness flat washers under the stator (under the stator where the 3 bolts locate - but ensure that the flywheel does not then rub on the bolt heads!). If the stator is too high then you need to take off the pickup and cut off the required number of laminate plates so that the pickup sits lower.

Scootering and or others have published/posted details of how to check pickup alignment against the flywheel triggers.

I didn't start buying Scootering sgain until Dan took over so I am none the wiser as to height alignment.

Mark the magnet on the flywheel next to the crossover points with tippex.Mark the side of the pick up in line with the trigger points,re-fit the flywheel and look through the flywheel window and see if the tippex marks line up.

Be easier to go back to points.

Now I'm truly lost with regard to height. What should the clearance be ?

As described, you need to remove flywheel so that you can paint corresponding lines on the side of the pickup, in line with the 2 pickup trigger lines. This ideally should be in white paint or tippex so that they are clear to see when you refit the flywheel. Now also paint lines over the weekend triggers on the inner face of the flywheel magnets. Refit the flywheel and look through the windows in the flywheel facentre until you see the magnetic triggers align with your marks on the side of the pickup, then note whether you need to raise or lower pickup/stator.

It will all become very easy to see once you've marked lines down the side of the pickup.

I cut two thin laminates off, and it runs. The next one is much thicker. Can I cut that? And if so how?! The thin ones cut off easy enough with a cold chisel, not sure the thick one will!
