Is your kickstart rubbing on the top plate?

Did you check if all the plates moved freely in the basket and were flat?

It was a tight fit hence the thinnest steels and corks but yes I think there was a bit of wiggle possible. Maybe not enough by the sounds of it but I cant see how I can get anymore. Also I had to bend the bottom and top corks ears to get the top plate to sit low enough.. Not sure what you mean by flat? how can they not be?

Because they can be badly made or warped from abuse.

Ed. is this a trick clutch 5 plates or the like. I understood the engine you were building was standard ish. Unless you are trying to cram 5 plates in you shouldn't need to bend tabs. If you have, I found the steels very hard to bend without twisting them. A standard clutch with Surflex plates will take a lot of stick. Going for better springs would be the next step.

You can also put a 1mmwasher on the outside off kickstart which draws the shaft out to help with space

It's a standard clutch. I could not get the plates to separate without going for thin steels and corks.

I've taken it apart - I can't see any obvious sign that the kick-start is catching, although it might be that it's top early to tell

Here is a video of my clutch which hopefully shows that the plates will now separate. It also shows that the outer basket moves. Is that right?

All the steels and corks look flat. The thing I noticed was that Id you looked at the top Cork and the plate under it there was daylight visible because the ears being bent down so much were preventing it sitting properly. Obvs not great and needs correcting but is this the cause of it slipping?

Oh it also looks like there is a larger than expected gap between the bottom plate and the bottom of the basket?

The only non standard part is that I'ce upgraded the springs

Ed. in the absence of an adult, I use the clutch compressor to push down looking for the plates to separate as it would in use.with your thinner steels you seem to have far too much space, in the old days before thinner steels we went for a 5 plate but it was really a 4.5. You shaved the cork of the extra plate and that side acted as fork on one side steel on the other. It was a tight fit with standard everything else but worked if it didn't come through the chain case side.
Try the normal steels. Paint the top plate or use tippex and see if it scuffs off leaving witness marks normally on the kickstart elbow. I always grind a bit off that spot..

Reassembled the clutch with the think corks and std plates and it was a massive difference in compression and the sound it makes as its kicked over even to the short period when it was sparking yesterday. Still cant believe I didnt spot it sooner! You wouldn't think I'd owned scooters for as long as I have! Too long messing around with Luis of late is my excuse. ha ha

Anyway onwards and upwards, next up checking my timing and plug chops for my new carb set up. should be fun.
