Many members of car fora are lambasted for retro fitting HID's by the self appointed enforcement nazi's.
For all the b@11@x posted, no one can ever say they know of anyone being done for it.

A car should be equipped with self levelling suspension or self compensating lights plus headlamp washers to be compliant. The DVLA seems to imply the same applies to bikes, but the DVLA doesn't make law.
The police don't seem too keen to test the law on this so it remains a bit of a grey area.
A brief trawl across the interthing - at least 2 pages - and nothing but confusion.

I've had them fitted for at least 4 MOT's on the car and never had a mention.
Next year, the rules re enforcement are supposed to be being tightened. This has been said every year since I fitted mine.

May be resolved soon as LED's continue to become cheaper, afaik no legislation on them.
H4 fitting lamps giving 3800lumens (not really sure how that equates, but the pictures show BRIGHT). Power consumption around 40w or less, price around £30/40 mark and up.
A guy on an international off road site I inhabit floggs 'em - lots of satisfied customers and very few complaints or failures. First off the reflector would need some fettling to accommodate the H4 locating tabs and a means of retaining the h4 lamp in place. However, the lens will be the problem as it is fluted like the lambretta originals and will scatter the light. It's been tried by Mark and Byron on here with the fluted reflectors and deemed not to be an improvement. We have been waiting for someone to make a modern reflector/lens combo for the lambretta so the HID could be utilised. Maybe Jockey will find a rectangular unit that suits the GP.

Having said all that, an H4 conversion to the existing reflector using a 60/55 watt lamp might be an improvement.

Triumph tigers have terrible headlights so quite a few have fitted hid. They also have plastic lenses. I've seen several which have burnt due to the hid beam.

Part of the reason hids are brighter is that they convert more electrical energy to light. So the lamp is cooler. This in turn means that the beam is more powerful.

We now enter the realms of materials technology as what is important is knowing the light frequency and what frequency the lens material absorbs most.

I don't know enough about this to give a definitive answer but i have seen plastic lenses burnt by hid. I think glass is safer.
