My take was how much will it cost to build an engine from scratch with parts that improve the parts you'd ditch from a complete SIL engine or parts that you'd need to buy that are an improvement, ie, the engine mounts and the crank you listed, but without going overboard on exotic parts like 7 plate clutches and 5 speed gearboxes, etc.

Before we get ahead of ourselves here boys, one question? Have we got a full and/or useful tool kit to do the job in hand? Because if not, ching ching, and there's no way anybodys borrowing my plug spanner before we bloody well start, as I never got me last one back!

What's the general opinion on these layshafts, any good for 30hp+ engines? Any other options except for the MB?

joespeed wrote:the crankshaft bearing is suspect but will do short none thrash for quite some time,it is far cheaper to buy the stock indian 200cc engine and improve it by putting in a new crank or just a rod kit ,new main and mag bearings, chain and nylon style tensioners, this will be quite a good motor further improvements like rear hub bearing can be changed but is less critical,
buying loose components is not the cheapest way unless your building something quick with lots of special and uprated parts.
good cheap engine will cost around £1300 then after this the skies the limit!
i bet i'm close,i do note some prices quoted are cheaper than cheap and you should be taking an average price on these parts as some areas/shops may not be as cheap!!
