You are right on all counts. The crinkle ring is used on RD's to increase the piston ring seal from a thinner ring. Although the manufacturers recommend using the ring (which when GT's first arrived they were). Subsequent experience proved that this ring worn and broke up (I've seen this on a couple of occasions). Consequently the advice is to leave it out.
The manufacturers offered no explanation for the ring breaking up although I suspect it has something to do with the larger bore clearance on a GT kit than on an RD. The piston and rings are Japanese although the supply of branded RIK rings seems to come and go. They did stop supply of the crinkle washer some time ago but they appear to have reintroduced it. I'll inspect the packaging and remove them from now on (I guess I have not done it before because some customers think the product has been tampered with).

I was a bit concerned that the rings weren't in a RIK box, but did look fine to use
I think not including the crinkle ring with the kit would avoid any ambiguity
