Thanks chaps. I have connected an earth to the headset - bare metal. That still leaves the spliced wire from the earth. I have done this like the sparkright example. I'm sure it's simple but I still only have a taillight and side light. Where does this spliced wire go?

Your dip and high red and blue get their power from the ignition switch orange. If this is ok then it must be the red on the H4 connector block that needs earthing.
