Maxima MTL 85 is a GL3 Gear Oil, which means it has mild EP additives. These additives offer more protection to mating parts by creating a chemical barrier between Gears etc. As a comparison Rock Oil ST90 is a GL1 oil and as such as no additives other than anti-foam etc. Just to be clear, EP additives do not create Clutch slip. Another GL3 Gear Oil is Castrol's ST90.
And just to finish with a little advertising, Scooterotica, Chiselspeed and MB endorse and sell Maxima Oils.

I agree, been using MTL 85wt for years now. It's cheap, works great, no clutch or shift problems and can pick it up locally.

Fek, just checked what I put in my TS1 gearbox, Halfords Motorcycle 80/85 GL4......might account for some of the slipping

Jaso MA spec will work with the clutch, if anything 10w/30 is a little light, would be better if it were 10w/40, but I'm sure it will be ok, it's roughly equivalent to an 80 weight gear oil which Vespa's use.
