Really, the brass plunger that hits the pressure plate and fits on to the clutch cover. I didn't think there was enough room if the clutch is still in the engine.

Remove the clutch and try and fish it out, its big enough to see so shouldn't be a problem to get out. Worst case scenario is take flywheel side casing off, with the engine still in the frame.

it had fallen down into the engine, not a big gap but it did it, clutch back out, no sign of it, searched everywhere around, no sign, opened the cases, poked around, no sign of it, really scratching my head by this stage, thinking maybe it didn't get inside...then spotted it wedged in the kickstart return spring.. . . . and all because I got distracted for a tiny millisecond because my dinner was ready!
now to put it all back together again

oh the joys!!
