Not suggesting that it's a good thing but I've not used a torque wrench on a flywheel for many a year, if ever (oops)! However, over tightening one will only ever lead to issues. Getting the tapers to match is the key to this and I doubt that you need anything like this figure if the tapers match. Indeed, if you push on a correctly matched flywheel then you have to apply a reasonably amount of force just to 'break' the taper and get the flywheel back off, and that's by hand! Added to the lower inertia of these light AF flywheels then I really don't see any reason for applying too much pressure (stop it feet!).

How much is too much?

Hi everyone,

thanks for advice.

Have lapped flywheel to crank.

Everything now looking OK.

PHEW !!

Challenger, was a combination between Bob Monkhouse from Huddersfield, and then at some point also with martin from Chiselspeed.

Has reed valve induction, bit like a TS1, but before they were around.

When is running well its great, a real thumper. Loads of Torque

Currently on its third piston with me, 71.5, third overbore on a Kwak 750, had to wait ages to get a single piston from the states.

At one point was a sod to start. high compression, snapped a couple of kickstart shafts.

Actually replaced with a new crankcase side (as I'd had it powder coated), been OK ever since.

Wondered if somehow the kickstart shaft on the other had got out of line

Anyway, back to play with the timing now

Found this old post and wanted to resurrect a current problem we have. Woodruff key split in two from loose flywheel. It has left a circular line on the crank, not that deep and sacrificial damage I would say and the keyway in the crank is absolutely fine. On putting the flywheel back onto the woodruff key (without torqueing up) it's a little sloppy with some slight movement as its oscillated left to right on the woodruff key. I initially put some chemical metal on the inside of the boss to the flywheel and torqued it up onto the crankshaft and it seems firm and the bike started ok.

Do you think I should strip off the flywheel and put back on using 'grinding paste' or is the sloppiness such it needs renewal ??
