Yes, he was italian. No such thing as the simple way.

To my mind the small L-shaped vent in the original cowling is there for a reason - it is to ensure that the cooling air goes right around to the back of the barrel so that the fins are evenly cooled before the air can get out. If you remove half of the cowling then one side of the barrel will be dramatically colder than the other side which is only cooled by ambient air.

More than that, the slot in the cowling is designed to work in conjunction with the shape of the kickstart running board so that the hot air exits under the runner and doesn't fill the area under the sidepanels with hot air where it will just build up, warming the tank and the inlet charge and reducing engine efficiency. Have a look at the layout when you whip a panel off - I imagine they studied it in quite close detail. What other reason would there be for making something that was such a complete cun7yfu(k to get off?

Having said all that: Innocenti designed their scooters to run iron barrels, with running boards and full panels, so how this works in scooterboy mode is another matter entirely

But doesn't the sales blurb recommend it for alloy kits only?

And with variable ignition units and lo-comp heads you can get kits running much cooler these days.

Even the avanti kit has a huge cut out on the cowl compared to standard.

I have only seen the photos on here, but isn't the Avanti cowl cut away at the drive side?

ok ,so i,m looking forward to some heat testing on the above cowls/cyl temps
but is it not the case on lambys that its always the offside of the cylinder that is hottest ?
and is it not the case that as cylinder bores and performance has increased the more cut out /venting has been made ...as in indian cowls having a bigger outlet than previous cowls etc
my thinking is that maybe too much of a wrap around cowl is actually forcing already hot air around further and so aggrevating the situation .
anyway its very interesting and hopefully someone can test the results from using one and let us know
I also agree that the hot air should be ejected away from under the panels and under the rhs floor board

cool, i could have made money with all the broken cowlings I have binned

ive never really understood why people have spent so much time and effort to tune lambretta engines but next to nothing on cooling them when they are notoriously bad at dissipating heat

the fan designs are not the best
only half a cowling
some say to keep the cowling as close to the exhaust as possible - now only half a cowling

i undestand the theory but am sceptical until someone actually takes meaningful measurements

big bore tuned motors ,small barrel fins and a cowl that keeps heat in not a good combo IMO
