Did you use the TDC tool in the way that Ricspeed described, if not you will be way out

Yes, using the TDC tool turned the flywheel one way then the other. Then used timing disc to find the centre of the two points. Followed the process as on Scooter Techniques lambretta engine rebuild DVD.

Been told to pour a thimble full of petrol down the spark plug hole and try to kick over, this has not worked either..

I have noticed that the noise is different when I kick it over with and without using the throttle, could this be an indication of anything

Difference in sound is probably induction noise with carb slide open. Check that choke is operating correctly, and try not to flick throttle open when trying to start

I'll check choke tonight and try kicking over again....

if you have a spare coil (cdi) try that,have had the same problem myself,also use stickys book to check the resistance across the stator coils, you will get a good spark but it wont be strong enough to fire up if you have an iffy coil or black pickup.

Dodgy cut out switch, or ignition switch

Checked choke and its ok, still no start........

What do you mean by a black pick up

...you'll probably find the engine totally flooded with fuel now...take the plug out,put it in first gear full throttle,no air filter,and push it as hard and fast as you can for 10yards +...this will clear all the flooding fuel/oil out of the engine...once you've got your breath back n had a shandy refit clean gapped champion N3 plug,fuel/choke/ignition on,off stand try a couple of prods on the self starting lever,try a few times,try different throttle openings......if this fails try bump start..run with it carb side,flick into second[no clutch] bump the seat with your arse...then push like f**k..try different throttle...should do the trick...enjoy!

dont want to confuse the situation further but if bump start has not worked you will be both knackered and migithy pished off.

others on here will know far better than i but i've also had wrong jets in the carb that made mine an equal nightmare to start - what engine - carb - exhaust set up have you got?
