Yes.
you dont state what bike youve got but if its an older model it could be the posistion of the gear arm where it connects to the shaft going into the gear box.
Freshly built GP
As a guide with the engine built if you put the bike in forth gear (lambretta) with the gear rod from the cables attatched the arm should almost hit the rear suspension casting on the engine, if the gap is to big it wont go forward enough to select 1st, do you understand.
Yes. It's right, gap about 5mm.
Another little thing to check is the arm with the gear cable swivel fitted with the kink facing inwards ?
It's facing inwards

Benn out again. If I put it in 1st without the engine running and rock it back and forth, it stays in gear, but if I twist the gear change towards neutral it does seem to go out of 1st to neutral too easy.

No, I've misunderstood. I have it the correct way. As in pages 32, 42 & 233 of Sticky's Manual.

Took it for another quick spin. It goes into first, but once I try to move, it jumps back into neutral.

Tried tightening and loosened cables.

Is the swivel part of the linkage allowing first gear to be selected fully? I had to file mine a little bit in order to get the right "click" when selecting first. otherwise it would keep jumping out. this was on a SIL motor. Five minutes with a file and now its perfect.

well my guess is that its not selecting 1st gear properly and so when the motor is running its kicking it out ,this is usually caused by poxy indian tie rods and linkages that foul against each other in the first gear position .

Bilko if i where you i'd try disconnecting the tie rod from the gear selector shaft and put it into first gear by pushing the selector towards the front of the engine. Bump start the scoot and see if it stays in gear, if it does it's probably your tie rod snagging on the gear swivel where the trunion goes, if it still jumps out it must be internal.
