Freshly built GPyou dont state what bike youve got but if its an older model it could be the posistion of the gear arm where it connects to the shaft going into the gear box.

It's right, gap about 5mm.As a guide with the engine built if you put the bike in forth gear (lambretta) with the gear rod from the cables attatched the arm should almost hit the rear suspension casting on the engine, if the gap is to big it wont go forward enough to select 1st, do you understand.
It's facing inwardsAnother little thing to check is the arm with the gear cable swivel fitted with the kink facing inwards ?
Benn out again. If I put it in 1st without the engine running and rock it back and forth, it stays in gear, but if I twist the gear change towards neutral it does seem to go out of 1st to neutral too easy.
