i have been informed of the bgm regulator which looks simmilar to the varitronic one(if not the same)which runs a ac output and a dc for battery charging,no doubt the uk dealers will be stocking them but can be seen on scooter-center.com...
anybody got any feedback on these?

I am positive the Varitronic reg will work with an Indian stator or any other 12 v for that matter,I have one on my Vega electronic and so does a mate on his GP.Contact RCA Racer on here or Cam Lam for advice.

It will work on a SIL stator for AC only, but the vari stator has an extra tapping to terminal 4 (charge) and is the feed for the DC out on B+. I believe this reg/rec is the same as fitted to some Peugeot Speedfights.

It's different to the varitronic and will work on a SIL stator but looks very similar to the Baotian reg/reg, which I believe would do the same job (although if you want to try one, check with the seller first)..

I can testify that the Varitronic regulator fitted to RCA Racer works fine with my fitted SIL type 12v AC stator and charges the battery no problem

I don't know if I've missed something but I'm planning to run a DC through a normal SIL stator. I got a '5 pin DC' SIL regulator which will have a pin for the battery. I guess the extra pin(s) from the regulator will have a rectifier inside the regulator converting the AC to DC.

I take this back  I've just had a look and the stator is AC, the regulator can't be that smart.

OK, can you confirm that it is a varitronic one and not the type like the BGM. Are you only using 3 of the terminals or connecting it like the way Wack described earlier, with the stator power wire and the loom wires on different terminals, which would mean it isn't actually a varitronic type.
Perhaps a picture of yours may clarify the situation as the vari one is a distinct shape. I'd hate to see someone spend £25 on something that won't do the job they've bought it to do, but am happy to be proved wrong.
Kev.

If you have the correct 5 pin reg/rec then yes you will get AC to half wave DC for a battery.
These have a rectification diode and a separate regulator (series type I believe) for the DC side and allows the output to vary to suit the batteries needs.

i tried a Varitronic reg on my cutdown (wanted something small/ compact) didnt work at all. Running original AF ducati electronic .

That's a relief. The thing is the drawing in the Sticky book it shows more that 4 wires leaving a 'DC stator' going to a 5 Pin regulator. On my 'AC stator' with only the 4 wires (red, green, white and purple) where do they go? I know the some go to the CDI and there's some on DC loom but I'm still puzzled.
