Probably, but have at times seen some on other sites getting irritated by seemingly simple questions, I enjoy this site for it's accepting and helpful nature ( how it should be ) and don't want to upset anyone.

WERE THE SPIDER POKES OUT UNDERNEATH IS WERE IN YOUR CASE THE CROWN WHEEL NEEDS MACHINING HOW MUCH IS IT OUT I USE SOME EMMERY SHEET TO LAP MINE DOWN IV NEVER USED A MACHINEST
I'm having exactly this problem now fitting a new lightened crownwheel.
so just twist the endplate side of the crownwheel about on a bit of emery til the spider sticks out 0.1mm ?
[due to other misfitting parts

] I'm about 12 hrs behind schedule, so tempted just to stick my old crownwheel back on, I was raising my gearing with an 18/47 setup, but my chain is now worn enough to fit a 16 sprocket, so might just go with that for now, and do the sprockets swap next time I'm in there.
I've had a day of supposedly quality parts not fitting

In my experience when the spider is too short, this normally causes the spider and clutch sprocket to become locked together when the clutch nut is tightened, preventing both from spinning independantly of each other, which is needed for the clutch to spin freely when operated.... I usually use a sanding belt to relieve a tight sprocket if needed, but the minimum ammount needs to be removed from the clutch sprocket. but usually I just substitute the clutch spider for another one...Sorry I didnt post earlier only just seen this....

yeah, it took you a full ten minutes to reply !
[as well as replacing a shot rear bearing] part of the purpose of the stripdown was to up the gearing, and i'd forked out for new sprockets & chain, so I wasn't going to beaten, but had to file some off the crownwheel first before lapping on a bit of emery, it was that bad. It would lock up just be tightening the clutch nut by hand. all spins freely indepentantly now

so slung the clutch in, ready for refitting the side casing. I know the other lightened crownwheel i have is going to need the same treatment too.
