Good idea and the one I use but I fold the long tab over the edge of the flange.

To stop the tab washer itself moving?

Yerp, Belt and braces, if the washer can't move, neither can the nut ;-)

Taffs (or rather the guys who took over the shop) sell wire lockable allen bolts which are a great idea as there's no stud to come loose.

I had those and they seemed to loosen and allow the flange to blow, but it's tightening hi tensile bolts into ally that I wasn't too keen on, especially if removing the manifold all the time to stop it leaking :?

you gota look after your engine this was a home brew ts 240 it vibrated itself to death(after10k miles) the drive side bearing journal went oval and a large crack formed  the cylinder was replated for 50quid and it used a H2 piston with holes cut in it and thimbles on the gudjen pin as it had a tv roded gp crank that was from a 240 i had in 1985

don't say that I've just fitted a pair of Taffy bolts.......took me ages to lockwire them too....thought that this would be the answer and I'd never have to lay down under the engine with an 11mm spanner ever again?

try washers called"nordlock"...i use them...basically they are two ratchet style washers that sit back to back,a good engineering suppliers should stock them if you dont go the lockwire or tabwasher route
