On the fly cowl you'd be better trimming material off the back of it so it pushes further back onto the mag. You then keep the nice edge at the front. You might need to do some tweaking where it meets the head cowl but rather that than do the way shown which I think looks ropey.

I took a bit more of the lip off and smoothed and polished the mag housing to give a better flow onto the cylinder

I think your right about it looking ropey Ian, I've done it the way you suggest by removing the metal from the edge leaving the front face untouched leaving a better looking curve. But the problem I had was if the full face was reduced then the alloy of the housing needs cutting as this sits too high, also the head cowlneeds to be reduced in width to align with the flywheel cowl. But it does look neater done your way but the head cowl needs work aswell.
It would be good to see how the foam filled cowl looks and works. I like the sound of this.

Just read this post, when i was talking with dave webster he showed me some photos of his group 4 race engin his mag housing was like a work of art.
I think if i remember right he machined one or both the lips in the housing off and smoothed it out. will ask him his thoughts may put a post about this and his view.
Thanks
