2mm from edge of rim to the sticking out bit that runs round the tyre..if your fitting it on the back you might need MB spacers or they can ru on the engine casing...mine does a bit.

I use hand soap, which afaik is pretty much what is used for fitting at tyre depots... but without the smells

Just pump it until you start wincing at the prospect of it going BANG it should pop into place.

A good tip which I have used for yonks is to wipe silicon sealer all round the inside of the rim, while it's still 'wet' it will help the tyre slide on and once cured will not allow the tyre to spin if you've got a higher powered bike like other lubricants may.

It may even be argued it might help keep the rust at bay - I also squirt a bead around the rim before bolting together .

It doesn't make it too much harder to separate the halves later on either.
