Yes, it is an electric starter. The flywheel was an original AF lightweight item, with the starter wheel from a Piaggio Sfera machined into the face. Nice.

When I finally bolted it all together and pressed the starter button, it turned it over (just), but in the wrong direction. :o

This rates at about 11.7 on the oh-sh!t-o-meter.

I'm over it now........ :(
Havent laughted like that in a little while, I explained it to the Mrs but just got that look that they do :roll:

best giggle i,ve had for a while matey...............
and the sad thing is............we,ve all done something similar............spent loads of time /effort /money etc into something that we was sure would be great...........only to find that it failed ..........dismally........

If you connected the wires the other way around would it have worked ?
You know ... a bit like gear cables ! ;)

How well did the crankcase induction motor perform ?

That was kind of where the problem started. The starter motor has a thrown pinion, and it will only work in one direction. Reversing the polarity would make the electric motor turn in the opposite direction, but the pinion would still be geared incorrectly.

You know, you hold this starter motor in your hand and manually operate the pinnion time and time again and there is only one direction that this damn thing could turn the engine over, or else the pinnion will free-wheel. If I handed you the motor, you'd agree. But oh no. The reality of the first press of the button was quite disappointing.

The scooter was sold as an incomplete project, but the engine ran and had heaps of torque. The spec was pretty good. Wiseco piston, Rotax rod, steel liner, four transfers and two boost ports, two part head, CR500 reed valve, Delly 34mm etc etc.
