The Sip speedo pickup magnets are small and strong, that's a great idea.

Personally, Col, I think a lot of this is way over complicating matters. The stuff Toddy refers to us good stuff but I use this only if there is a pin hole leak.

If you google "petrol tank cleaning" there's a 3 stage process referred to in a US site, realclassic. It leaves the internals very clean and, in my opinion, not in need of any sealant unless you suspect you have a pin hole leak

My series 2 petrol tank had bits of rust in the petrol,I used petrol to clean it out,I used about 5 litres of petrol and cleaned out the tank (cleaning the petrol each time through cheesecloth until it ran clean out of the tank)I then fit 4 of these magnets on the outside of the tank around the tap outlet.http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Block-30-x-20 ... cH1QmK5PZA I did this over 2 years ago and its run clear ever since.

Thanks Paul but I've googled tank rust removal and watched several (all different) methods of de-rusting tanks from water soluble liquids to electrolysis and they all advocate sealing the tank to stop the rust reforming. I was of of the opinion that the film of 2 stroke would protect the bare metal from corrosion but my tank is literally covered in crusty rust, eve the baffle plate :? Maybe it was built from rusty steel in the first place or maybe it's been left somewhere very damp for a while before I got it but I'm surprised I didn't spot it.
I have bought the product now and it does get good reviews so will probably give it a go.
I still haven't had any opinions on the abrasive quality of powdered rust. I'm sort of guessing that it will be softer than the iron in the steel but maybe harder than the ally piston?

A friend had a rusty tank. And he used a product called evaporust .. the results were amazing! And it's reusable so added bonus.

When i cleaned out my petrol tank i used brick acid cleaner from b and q.
I mixed it with a bit of water as per instructions and poured it in. Soon eats the rust. Also cleans up rusty bits etc. I was amazed how strong it was.

However you seem to be running very expensive engines. Ts1 or gt cylinder.
I cannot help but think you should just buy a new tank with the cutouts you need.

Just my opinion though.

It appears people are relying on the tap filter ... no one using an inline paper filter?

The trouble with an inline filter is that they slow the flow of fuel and depending on the size of the filter, they can get clogged with crap and slow the fuel flow into the carb and cause fuel starvation.
