I expect the story is that a 5 speed is not just a copy of an existing design. The recent 5 speeds are the result of lots of development cost on top of the initial design work.
That cost gets paid by you know who. The less customers, the higher the % of those costs each pays.
The ebay 4 speeds could be great or some shitty rip off, that will have people writing terse and stoutly worded emails to august bodies such as the mags or ezines.
I doubt even the best get much R&D - "just copy the pattern mate".

The gearbox I was looking at was from Casa. I'd imagine they did loads of R&D before putting it into production. That as already mentioned costs money. Apart from working out ratios for an extra gear how much more could that be cost wise compared to a four speed? I'd imagined manufacturers of a 4 speed don't want them to break anymore than someone making a 5 speed.

yes i think mb was the first,but the high ratio is not too good for the clutch or two up in town traffic!
