I would say bolt a bit too long and some signs of work on the casing so not as thick as standard.
The stator bolt only needs about 4 threads beyond the thickness of the stator plate.
Now you know the hole is there put the bolt back in and look into the hole. How much space is there? I guess the end of the bolt is just on the edge of the casing?

Yeah to cold out in the "scooter room" tonight it'll wait for another day..

Job done. Took mag housing off and put a bit of JB down the bolt hole with the hole at the bottom. Will also make sure I use a good thread lock when I reassemble. With the mag housing off it was clear to see that the stator bolt hole had been drilled far too deep so there mustn't of been much meat left at the bottom

That's disappointing quality, unless you got a discount. My SIL casing bought from SR several years ago is much tidier than that.

This may have been caused by either air or oil pressure (hydraulic pressure) when the stud was screwed in especially if you put Loctite on the threads. I have known this to crack cast iron castings.

It could well have been, although I don't recall putting any loctite on the stud, because the stud head was an Allen key head, didn't want to risk rounding it off. It has a cut down stud in there now
