Anything over 100 PSI is fine. Mine has been 105 for 2 years. Again, only an indicator.

of course gauges can vary considerably, mines a gunson from way back in the 70s so could be considerably out. As you say only an indicator.

Hi Mate,
80 PSI is plenty to start your engine, so do not panic. Probably stuck rings. Try bump starting it.

Thanks again for all the input and welcome to the forum Kenny.
Will try a push start next time I'm at the workshop.

I built an engine recently that was right bu99er to start. Eventually noticed how little compression there was when I noticed I could turn the flywheel by hand easily. Stripped it down and found I'd used the wrong piston and it was about 3 oversizes too small!

Hi , my 175 conversion pinks like mad at 45mph plus . Timings set 16 degrees just checked with compression tester 175psi :o . squishe is only .85 so will add .5 to base or head (dont run ahead gasket at the moment). Think that i will have to remove metal from combustion chamber as well as gasket. As well as pinking i dont think kick start will last too long with this much compression . Dont want to remove engine to check head volume so what psi should i aim for? thanks John
