I only buy oil that has been tested and endorsed by JASO.
Many oils are described as satisfying or exceeding the the requirements of JASO FB, FC or FD but have not actually been submitted for testing to JASO. That is not to say they wouldn't pass but hey would you take your dog to a vet who probably could of got qualified if he could be arsed?
Here is the list of oils that have actually been tested.

There was a(n) (in)famous thread on here....a long, long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away. Which reputed that all oils were created equal (or at least that there was very little between them).
My opinion however is that's that simply stating 'I've run it for ages and it was fine' is akin to saying 'my dad smoked 60 a day and he didn't get cancer'.
The fact is, with regards to oil....not cancer, is that you only find out how good it is after you've done thousands of miles and then strip it down for pre-oil and post-oil wear tests.

Been using exol fully synth for about 2 years now and no problems at all, however i deliberately buy 5 litres at a time so it's never sat for any length of time.

You say 25lt tub I've heard its only supposed to be good for 12 months how long had you been using that tub? not sure if that is so but thats what I heard. Its taken me that long to get through 25lts and I haven't had any issues but smokey as people say but nothing else.Be interesting to know those that have had issues how old theres was.I have about 1lt left in my tub that I'm not going to use and have bought another 25lt and just run down to IOW with it no issues.
I dont know were you got your info from, but there is absolutely no evidence that oil,2 stroke or 4 stroke, has a determinate shelf life.Oil companies may use a best before date, just to cover there backs.

It was the fully synthetic. Just got the rings out and they were very worn and ready for changing.

Wasn't a Racetour piston and rings was it?

I had exactly the same problem with exol.
On the other hand, many many people use it regularly with no problems at all.
I do tend to run my scoots on the rich side, maybe the stuff builds up if there's too much in there. Who knows?

I must admit that I've had a couple of heat seizes lately. Both of which have been on the fully synth and probably as a result of not investigating it properly the first time. I can't say categorically that it was the oil. But both were under identical circumstances and involving long climbs uphill on very hot days. The second one has done it though, and it'll have to come apart. So maybe I'll find more then.
