Symptoms of blowing slip joint?

Scooter lands at my house tomorrow morning at 8am, so by the weekend I'll know the cause. Don't think that its timing, which was set at 16 degrees static. Did around 900 trouble free miles till I heard a high pitch whistle whilst overtaking a line of lorries, then no power, no compression and a hot crackling engine. Took side panels off and noticed black oily mixture had blown out of inlet manifold.
