Ah, just read what you wanted about 'subtle' oops.
I recommended the Krober type I have on mine (motoplat) certainly not subtle however and bigger than the scitsu too on the LCGB forum.

I wanted an analogue clock type rev counter, I went for the Koso GP MK1. Fitted it into top of legshield toolbox, looks the part, but shows 13k revs when pootling on. Just has the wire coiled around HT Lead about 12 times...anyone else had problems with wildly wrong readings? Seems to be not far wrong when revved on the stand. If it makes any difference I run an M-Tech box...had read somewhere that Varitronics didn't work well with rev counters.

Don't know whether this helps... Trail Tech taco/hourmeter, about as basic as it gets but has been very reliable, runs from it's own "watch type" battery and just one wire to wrap around your ht lead. MB do the small stainless mount.
Oh... and I have Varitronic and it works fine.
