Shouldn't the tailpipe fit under the bottom of the engine cover ?

It should be more under than it looks in that picture, which is why I think fitting the U bend to check would be a good idea.

The exhaust bracket is not at fault. As already stated, you have an early engine casing, pre Innocenti introducing this additional fixing point to help secure the exhaust as they tend to fail on early motors. Virtually all/any of the manuals cover this issue but I have also recently noted that MB have put a thread covering this on their website and/or FB page.
The reason why MB have put this on their page is because the same question/problem keeps getting raised about the BGM pipe, which also has the bracket on the position it should be (as it is on yours), so they are now selling an additional bracket that can be welded to the exhaust to go to the earlier lug, which will need drilling and tapping (again, covered in many manuals) in order to use this later improvement in design.

PS - The tailpipe/kickstart issue is a common problem

As Adam said....

Perfectly illustrates the problem you're having.

Thanks guys, you were all right,as usual.Assemblede the complete exhaust, and it seems ok.Trimmed the tab on the kickstart and its all good.
So,its all good there.Thank you.
I had some work done on the engine by a dealer, bit of porting, because the piston was going below the bottom edge of the exhaust port,or was it above??Cant remember which.
Anyway, when they set up the timing, they didn't mark TDC and the 22 degree timing marks on the Stator housing,so I bought a degree wheel and thought I would do it my self.
Now I have to say that I have lost the will to live

.
Yes,I know its a left hand thread, and I know when a thread has gaulled.I just cant get the bloody nut off.It came off a few turns then locked, can tighten it back a few turns, and vice versa.
I think the crank is fooked. No,I know it is.Brand new from AF,new Varitronic, the nut has only been tightened twice.
I need a stiff drink.

That's not a problem.I will cut the tab off, drill and tap a thread, weld the tab on in the correct place, job done.
