Both those cranks are the same manufacturer. The difference in rods is an Italian supply thing, they will just swap rods they don't need to consult or explain to everyone. If there was a problem with rods snapping then it might explain why they swapped rods. The difference is end float is explained by the difference in assembled web width. All of those dimensions are well within production tolerances for a pressed assembly.

The GT rods are totally different to anything on the market. They are wider at the interface to the small and big ends. The leading/trailing edges of the rod are forged into a chamfer for low drag. The small end bearing is 22mm diametre to allow the use of an 18mm gudeon pin and there is a special SE bearing to allow the use of a 16mm pin in the same rod. The big end is 16mm wide which allows fitting into standard cranks and the SE is 18mm wide for wider bearings and to allow for increased end float without the roller being exposed. I hunted high and low for a rod with all the features, it wasn't available so I went and got them made together with special SE bearings.

Cranks will arrive early Jan 2016. As soon as the boat docks you'll know about it.

Have you got the rod and se bearing kits yet or will it be January too?

Rod kits, small end bearings (20mm or 22mm wide) and crank pins (straight and 1mm eccentric) are available now.
