Assemble clean and wet, allow 24 hours to cure.

It might not take the heat of an exhaust(depending on which part of the exhaust its used)The maximum temp of the copper RTV is 700f=370c .

You want a high temp silicone style sealant, not the same as exhaust paste used on cars. Cam Lam sell one or two. I buy the Granville one and seals up to about 400 degrees....its good to use on manifold in addition to gaskets and all exhaust joints. Remember on a two stroke its critical to seal the exhaust properly witha fexible sealant.
Before anyone says that exhaust gases reach 650 degrees, they are absolutley correct but the metal on the pipe etc never gets to these high temps, so the sealant works fine.

I used a copper RTA from the bay and it seems to be doing the job

As Grumpy sez, run a decent bead of Hi-temp RTV around the male end of the slip joint before slipping it in (nudge nudge wink wink). Then a small bead around the seam.

What's rtv?

Sorry, RTV stands for Room Temperature Vulcanization for us State-siders. In other words, a type of silicone.
