Had another play about with the brake tonight, found out (thanks Degs!) that my cable tension was preventing the plunger in the master cylinder to fully retract so when I have been pulling the brake lever the plunger hasn't been able to do its job, making an already difficult job even more so! Tomorrow I will be sorting out the cable and have another go. Thanks for all the hel as always

Then depress the syringe and fill the system from the bottom up. All the air then gets pushed out from the bottom. I spent three evenings trying to bleed a hydraulic disc brake the conventional way with no success. With a syringe it was done in under 5 minutes.
I have to agree. I got totally frustrated & pi$$ed off trying to bleed my disc brake.
I finally read something on here, went down to the vets (!) & got a big syringe and had it all sorted in about 10-15 minutes (I'm not quite as good as Phil!).

Perhaps my syringe is bigger than yours

Rather than using the lever to depress the piston take the lever off and use the end of a pencil. That way you can ensure the plunger/piston is fully depressed when pumping the system.
Good luck with this. A long cable, lack of gravity and long pipe work will not make it easy to set up.
