I bought one that had a substituted 3rd gear, which no longer provided the nice close ratio jump and had either been substituted as a result of breakage.... or the fear of breakage.

as an aside, I believe (but stand to be corrected) that early LI150 Specials were indeed nicknamed "Pacemakers" in GB (with "weak" and later stronger 3rd gears), and that the later LI150 Specials did in fact have SX150 engines fitted as standard in the factory.

Thats what the Lambretta Manual of Performance Tuning and Conversions implies in the Gear Ratio Section (page 54) anyway.

Anyone know for sure?

What would/could you use to substitute the 'weak' 3rd gear cog? From which model?

Thanks

I'll have to have a look but I seem to remember that it was one of the LIs (125 or 150). It meshed ok but lost the nice ratio of the 150S box.

Late li125 has the same gearbox as a pacemaker

So could I use the third gear from a late li125? Would that work/be stronger?

I don't believe the later loose 3rd gear will mesh with the early Christmas tree

mine has a 37 tooth cog fitted in 3rd,( I don't know what gearbox it's from) the gearbox works but Im not sure whether to trust it on a high powered motor.
Does anyone know if it's possible to use the early type 1,2&4 loose gears, a Spanish 3rd and a late type cluster to make up a pacemaker box?
