Horror more like...
After discussing this in the pub last night the latest theory is the gudgeon pin circlip has come out and is hitting a transfer port. We'll see...

Have you got a HPC crank? these regularly twist and also at the same time sling the weighted plugs into the path of the con rod. A twisted crank will definitely cause an air leak by distorting the timing side seal as it rotates. I've had 3 £300 HPC cranks twist on me so I won't ever use another.

The conclusion is somewhat simpler. When I took the head off this fell out...
At first I thought it was an electrical connector but then realised it was the nipple off the spark plug! It must have fallen in when I took the plug off. I wondered where it had gone...!!! Four of the nuts on the head were loose so it was probably letting air in so it's a good opportunity to rebuild an decoke the piston as well...! Cruddy...

Heh! Good news for me though... my only expense will be a tube of silicone!!!
