Do you run with or without a filter Chris? just wondering because turning the fuel off is never required where open carbs are concerned. I agree that excessive spitback can be reduced by careful setting up of the pilot and airscrew but can also be affected by the type of expansion, ignition advance etc. My old MK1 Muggy 186 was terrible for it and became impossible when I substitutes the Ancilotti for a JL3. My current Avanti is much better but still has moments, I don't need to turn the fuel off but if it idles for a few minutes, it will needs a lot of revs to clear it before pulling away or it will staff and go into the chugging mode.

Reason i question the rings being stuck is that the other symptoms that would have created do not show. I have good compression, starts easy when cold. Does sound awfull a lot like extensive spit back. I use foam filter. Maybe I should try it without foam filter for a while.

Pwk air screw settings, same as phbh bs or?

Breathe Easy filter was a nightmare even with a hole drilled in base so NO filter, just tea strainer. August 6000 and expansion pipe.
Got a pal with an old Muggy and that is embarrassing! Something I am told to do with fuel drawn down the boost port. I don't know but I couldn't be doing with it. Bump starting was OK as a teenager but now I've turned 21, I can't do it.

PWK air screw will work opposite to PHBH as it regulates air intake at front of carb, I believe

Also they are sensitive to float height being set correctly, and of the float snagging on the vent tube.

With the float bowl off and the carb upside down the distance from the float bowl chamber surface to the furthest extremity of the float should be adjusted so it is 19mm. On re assemble give a the carb a shake to ensure (audibly) that the float is moving freely.
