Im sure the shroud cover the underside of the bulb to restrict it reflecting of the reflector so just the top reflects ging you a dip beam

Yes, I suspect so Steve but the one in the scoot doesn't have the shroud and the dip seems ok but I do have a set of the other shrouded type for the car so will do some more experimenting at the weekend

Does it actually dip or just retract and allow less of the filiment to be exposed to the reflector ?

Not having seen coasters, the ones I looked at flick flack up at the end so it's nearer the top reflector for dip. Middle for full beam. The shrouded one shows a standard h4 lamp having 2 filaments 1 in front of the other the focal length changes giving dip and full beam. In the past some standard lamps I have used have the small shroud on one filament while others like the reed speed ones don't. The kit i have coming has a shroud and the hid moves in and out. Time will tell.

Yes, mine is unshrouded and flicks up and down to effect the dip/full beam. I do have a set of the shrouded ones but for a car. I haven't powered them up but the actual lamp unit looks the same as the one in the scooter. I think maybe the lamp flicks in and out of the shroud....I'll let you know later

Ok, I powered the shrouded one up and as I suspected, it operates exactly the same, the shroud stays still and the lamp flicks from middle to side. Light output seems similar in that they both gave me arc eye looking at them The shrouded one won't fit through the hole in the Jockeys reflector though, it's too big





It would be fairly easy to open the hole enough to get the shroud through but that is going to fill the reflector with statically charged dust that will be difficult to remove....or remove the shroud as I it seems to work fine without and the one I have here is only attached by 2 tiny self tappers

The construction of the shrouded lamp is much better and it would work with the extension cables available (£5.99) without having to chop the waterproof plugs off. I don't think I will be fitting the other system to my Marcos now as it also has fluted lenses in the headlamps (HB Viva) so I think I will canabalise it for use on the scooters

Theres some AC HID kits on ebay at the moment for people not on DC.

Are these things legal to use on the roads. I noticed last night flicking through web sites that some use the get out of jail term for off road use only

I think the rules on HIDs requiring 'self levelling' applies to cars only so fitment to 2 wheelers is ok. There are plenty of bikes out there with fitted, a guy at work just bought a fairly new Suzuki from a main dealer that has one of the shrouded types fitted (he didn't know until I told him). Either way, I'm keeping it in

Do you think that it would also work with the GP reflector?
