If its getting fuel and you have a spark, I would suggest draining the fuel tank and replace fuel. If this doesn't work, suspect a weak spark when its under compression.

It could be lack of compression as others have said although when I have had stuck/broken rings the plug hasn't got wet and rather than starting and running it has just backfired. I would be inclined to try fresh petrol before stripping the top end down especially as it sounds like it has not been used much.

Cheers again guys. Thank goodness it was resolved today. We were about to strip the top end but tried new plugs first but noticed intermittent sparking on testing against metal suspecting our new CDI might be faulty and delivering a weak spark, albeit last night it seemed to be consistently delivering a charge ??. We borrowed a new 'Ducati' CDI and it fired into life immediately and now seems to start ok............... yet another learning experience.
Can you check the CDI's on an ohms meter ? seems we got caught out on placing our faith in new parts again.............but happy we didn't have to strip any further so lucky escape lol.........cheers for your help all it is appreciated.

Nobody seems to think so, the only good test appears to be substitution for a known good one.
Someone somewhere must know how to QA them, they must do it in the factories that make them.....oh.

Yes good news it's sorted now. Next thing is 'he's fancy LED rear light......brake light does not work ..........

LED's are polarity sensitive. You (he) may just need to swap the wires around.

The factory QA test will just be to put a random sample on a test rig and check that the output is within the required tolerances. Connecting an ohmmeter across the various terminals would be meaningless as you will be involving several components at once.

had exactly the same problem on a mates GP, tried a brand new mitsubi cdi, same problem, tried ducati one cured it. I do wonder if there is some other issues contributing to the mitsubi one not working properly

Yes......its a real pain but you might be right. I have one stamped AFR on mine for at least 7 years without any issues, just lucky I guess.
