Have you had to cut a grove in the forks for the pinch bolt at 90 deg to the originals

No mate, I didn't.

Anyway it's sorted now. It turned out that the edges of the stainless chrome ring I bought off eBay (yes I know) were 'turned up'.

I remedied the situation by utilising a striking implement in a strictly controlled manner at the aforementioned edges.

In other words I beat the f#ck out of it until it fitted.

If in doubt, whack it until it agrees to fit.
