When you say reputable, were they close to you?

I recently had the same problem on an Li that I am finishing off for a friend. All the cables were in with all new chrome linkages with no markings on, but not connected up. Set up all the cables but couldn't select first. Thought at first it was the gear selector arm bush because the arm was rocking when trying to get 1st. Looked at it again and couldnt see what was wrong at first so ended up changing the linkages for original Innocenti items. After cleaning them up in work and zinc plating.them I put them on and was selecting all gears straight away. Looking at your pictures it looks like the same problem that the arm could not go far enough forward to select first without modification.
ive had to gring befor myself and ive had holes that were to big and in the wrong place which ive welded up and re drilled but have ended up with a selecter with no play ialso never use the grub screw in the trunion i replace it with a bolt
