I know nothing about electrics and didn't know what heat shrinking was, however I used my middle name "google" and found this. Would it be a good idea for the main bits of this thread to be saved and put somewhere on the site? ( more work for admin sorry)

Great video. The important bit is you have to put the heat shrink over the wire you are working on BEFORE you connect it. Very easy to forget.
I use the Maplins heat shrink. Its available in multiple widths and lengths a meter at a time. It reduces in size by 50% when you heat it up. They only do Black unless you buy a small pack thats designed for electricians that may have earth brown or red in the kit.
As the guy says tinning is the tip. New wire is usually fine but you may find redoing the end of an old wire harder as the copper wire may have tarnished. cut an inch of the old wire and you will normally find good clean wire unless its been wet.
I would recommend the Butane iron as being ideal for a Lambretta. They are self contained. heat up quickly and you can use the iron to shrink it as they often have a flame exit point. You can normally put the lid strait on and store it away without waiting for it to cool. and most are adjustable for heat settings and will be hot enough to tin cut gear cable ends for instance. Wrap a meter of two of solder around the pen cap of the soldering iron so when you pull it off to light it you have the solder available in one hand and the iron in the other.
