I've decided to go for a Mahle 3 ring piston and run it with the bottom ring off as I understand that's what the other happy tuner from Donny recommends!

There's probably nothing wrong with the SR but having considered my reasons for picking it over the Mahle, there wasn't really anything in it and the Mahle generally gets a huge thumbs up from those here.

wasn't there issues with the SR piston having an incorrect taper thus causing a rattle at certain RPM?

I had one fitted many years ago and whilst it appeared very well made and the bore/ piston clearance was correct, there was a fair amount of "slap" at times.

There was an issue with the 64mm piston, highlighted by MB I believe. I still managed to run a tuned SR186 on its original piston for thousands of miles. It's still running strong with only a small rattle at idle (not even sure it's there)
Because of this I fitted 66mm SR pistons to a couple of 200 set ups I did. These were also used without issue. I really rate these pistons as a budget option. Love the rings.

I too have been running the Mahle 3 ring (with just 2 rings) on my Saxelby 200 for yrs now and it's been spot on!! Cheap and so far bullet proof!! (s**t I've done it now). In my opinion it's all you need for a stage 4 spec and sensible sized exhaust port.
