Buy a chain long enough, a pull down tensioner and get a 16t and a 17t primary.
There's a fair chance it'll pull the 17t one, but it'll feel a bit more lethargic. Use that one for doing highway mileage, and pop your 16t one in when you're doing more local riding, or around twisties. It's only an hour's job to change.
Your biggest worry shouldn't really be the final drive, so much as the 3rd/4th gap.
