I stripped an untouched T5 motor at the request of the owner at around 6k- 7k (his speedo didn't work for a time) when he wanted a new malossi kit putting - the seals and bearings were in perfect condition - after a full inspection of the motor and some careful thought I did not strip them - I change the clutch plates and cruciform only
the bike has since had a set of rings in the malossi kit at 5k and still going like a good en with a further 3k

A great example of what is possible when you maintain the gearbox oil level properly

Yes, but if I open an engine I will change the big crank oil seal .....

The bike is serviced and looked after me - and wants for nothing
I would normally have changed the seal without a second thought but it was a genuine factory fitted item - done when piaggio where knocking decent build bikes out.
I stand by my judgement following careful inspection and consideration
the bike is still in my mates ownership and going very well - due for any oil change and good look over before the new season starts.

P200 , I ran for 12 years everyday, 100 miles a week, 300 sometimes when I changed job, bog standard . used it for rallies ,2"s up, loaded up, only one full bearing change in 12 years, ran on whatever OK oil was available at the time . 3 re-bores, but changed cruciform and main seals every year, and gear oil every month or so. great scooter, would go "off the clock" easily. always examined/cleaned everything on strip down , like I do with every engine. what makes me laugh is the amount of lammy cranks that go Bang! yet P2 cranks last , well, forever! why don't the lammy crank builders, go to the bloke who makes vespa cranks, and ask him to make them some!

mate runs a 1978 P2 that hasn't been apart yet.......

Just goes to show, that we are to keen to replace things when the casings are opened. I say leave well alone from now on, except seals, cruciform and clutch corks.
Where is the scooter now?

engine is in me mates, still going strong, frame went a bit ginger round the edges, so its under a cover for now, till I get round to doing it up again. standard vespa engines last a very long time if they are serviced properly.
