Bry, it has worked! All but one problem, the rear light now goes off instread of one when either brake is depressed, i take it i then go to the other lead - black but thought i had best check
Also, pm'd you but thought it might interest others on the forum about where I can get the right sized bullet connectors, i have tried various car factors and they are too big. i would like the sort that hold the cable in place by crimping?

do you mean the brake light is on all the time until you press the pedal or pull the lever ? or does the rear light go off when you press the pedal or pull the lever ? does it work ok with the front brake light wiring disconnected ?

then it sounds like the front brake is shorting the rear lamp out.
identify which wire at the rear is the brake light, by taking them off in turn and seeing when the rear brake switch works. Also check the earth in the rear lamp is good and not being shoted by nay other wires.
where have you plugged the front brake switch into in the headset ?
and how did you connect it to the rear lamp ?
nearly there

connected one to the brown(s) in the headset and the other originally to the black at the rear. Earth is pretty good, i put a large lead which goes to a numberplate screw. Before changing ignitions the rear worked ok, the front also when i first put it in last year but due to lots of other work i havent rode it much in the past year.

Agree with Byron you have a short, it will be somewhere along the wire that you have run from the front switch to the rear or, unlikely, inside the switch itself.

trouble is i have followed that and its clean all the way. I havent had my multimeter on it yet. Will let you know the outcome
Can anyone confirm the correct bullet size for the front connectors, forgot to get the calipers on them yesterday inbetween downpours, 3.9mm sounds a bit big??
