still no wiser had the headset off checked all wiring all seems good
re checked the carb needle sat ok and jets all good

what symptoms would a knackered cdi feel like ?

Ah yes, mine went. Symptoms in my case was good acceleration and then beyond half throttle would sort of cut out and falter but pick up at lower revs. Swapped for one that worked and all sorted. Worth a try and if you don't have a spare buy one cos you will need one sooner or later.
