My mid-weight flywheel was in the wrong position and I had to slot it all the way off to achieve the proper timing.

Im fully clockwise and then some to get my 15 degrees, so I reckon your flywheel boss is out, to be tuther direction and still wrong
heavy is good, heavy is reliable, and if it does fail, hit them with it!!!

I take it that this seems quite normal then and possibly some of the markings might be out on the flywheels? Will be strobing once I've got it started but it's always nice to have a rough starting point.

I seem to remember my strobing revealed the timing mark on the flywheel was also off considerably.
Funny as I did one for a friend and his was spot on.

just make all your own from scratch, thats what I did, the arrow on my flywheel was pissed and well inboard so difficult to judge
I just put it at the current TDC position, chose a place round at about 3 or 4 oclock position, marked it, took flywheel off, dragged a hacksaw blade across a few times to create a small nick, white spray paint, then wiped just leaving the paint in the groove, refit, find TDC with dead stop, then marked off 15,17,19,21 and 24 degrees, did the same trick with hacksaw blade and paint
now its got lovely clean marks, that strobe up a treat, the other marks will help if it has an mtech or similar fitted

Got the engine in today and fired up. Surprisingly the static timing wasn't far out and the lines on the flywheel did line up pretty much with the black box. I've got it strobed at 16 degrees but had to open the slots in the stator as far as they would go, any more and they would have been open ended!
